How to choose accounting software in Cyprus

Most accounting software is built for a large market and adapted for Cyprus later, if at all. This checklist covers what a Cyprus business or accounting firm should test before choosing: VAT, VIES, payroll, banks, AI and how accountants work.

Checked October 2026

Start with Cyprus VAT

  • Every box of the VAT-4, 1 to 11B, should be calculated from the posted entries, not typed in, and each figure should open to the entries behind it.
  • Periods should follow the quarter group the Tax Department gave the business, not only calendar quarters.
  • Reverse charge should work for services from abroad (Article 11), goods from the EU, and the domestic cases under Articles 11B, 11C, 11D and 11E.
  • Partial claims, such as entertainment and saloon cars, should claim only what the law allows.
  • Credit notes should reduce VAT in the period they are issued.
  • There should be checks before filing: VAT accounts agree with the return, boxes add up, EU customers have VAT numbers.

VIES every month

VIES is monthly in Cyprus, due by the 15th of the following month, and an empty statement is still expected for a month with no EU sales. Software should build the statement from the sales invoices, one line per customer with goods, services and triangular sales, check each customer's VAT number, and show anything it cannot report rather than dropping it.

Payroll that knows the Cyprus funds

  • Social Insurance, GESY, the Redundancy Fund, training, the Social Cohesion Fund and the Central Holiday Fund, each with its own ceiling, and Holiday Fund exemptions.
  • Income tax under the 2026 rules, worked out over the whole year, with TD59 allowances.
  • Monthly files for SISnet and TD7, and IR63 certificates at the year end.
  • Pay runs that post to the ledger, and Social Insurance payments that can be matched in bank reconciliation.

Banks the way Cyprus banks work

Not every Cyprus bank offers a live feed to accounting software. Check that the software can read statements from any bank as PDF or CSV, handle JCC and other card payouts that arrive net of fees, and book the exchange difference and bank fee on foreign card charges.

AI that saves time without guessing

AI is most useful for reading documents, suggesting accounts and matching bank lines. Ask how it handles uncertainty: does it mark an unclear date for you to check, or set it to today? Does it learn from your corrections? And are VAT, totals and balances calculated by the accounting engine rather than by the AI?

Built for the way accountants work

  • Many client companies under one login, each with its own chart, VAT setup and numbering.
  • Import of an existing trial balance and chart of accounts, including flat nine-digit codes.
  • Roles for staff and clients, locked periods, and a record of every change after closing.
  • Pricing that works for a portfolio, including holding and dormant companies.

Questions

What is the best accounting software for Cyprus?

The one that handles Cyprus VAT, VIES and payroll without workarounds. Test it on a quarter you have already filed and compare the result box by box.

Should accounting software submit returns for me?

Most software prepares the figures and files, and you or your accountant submit them in Tax For All or SISnet. Check exactly what is prepared and what you still do yourself.

Do I need accounting software if my accountant keeps my books?

Not necessarily, but shared software lets you and your accountant work on the same books, so nothing has to be sent at the end of the quarter.

How long does switching take?

With a trial balance ready, a company can usually be set up in an afternoon. Start at the beginning of a VAT quarter so each return comes from one system.
